Renting guide

Renting in Luxembourg as a cross-border worker

A cross-border worker can rent a home in Luxembourg on the same terms as any tenant: a written lease, a deposit of at most 2 months, agency fees split 50/50. If you move in, you declare your arrival at the commune within 8 days.

Can a cross-border worker rent a home in Luxembourg?

Yes. A lease for a home in Luxembourg follows the same rules for every tenant:

  • the lease must be in writing, or it is void;
  • the rental deposit cannot exceed 2 months' rent;
  • agency fees are split equally between landlord and tenant;
  • the tenant's notice is 3 months, unless the lease sets longer.

Do I have to declare my arrival at the commune?

Yes, if the home becomes your usual place of residence. Anyone, whatever their nationality, who settles in a Luxembourg commune files a declaration of arrival within 8 days of occupying the home. It is done in person, with a valid identity card or passport and, usually, proof of residence such as an extract of the lease.

An EU citizen arriving from abroad to stay more than 3 months also files a declaration of registration at the commune, within 90 days of arrival.

Am I entitled to the rent subsidy or the deposit aid?

Only if you live in Luxembourg. Both aids require, among other things, a right of residence of more than 3 months, registration in the national register and a home rented as your main residence in Luxembourg. As long as your main residence stays across the border they do not apply; once you have moved and registered, you can apply if the other conditions are met.

Is my application dossier any different?

No. The landlord looks at the same things as for any applicant: your identity, your income and your work contract. The lease must state the full identity of each tenant.

Does becoming a resident change anything besides housing?

Yes, your tax situation in particular. Before moving, check with the Luxembourg tax administration (impotsdirects.public.lu) and the authorities of your current country.
